What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are a dental surgery procedure intended to provide a proper replacement for your missing tooth. Teeth implants give you the confidence to achieve a more natural smile. Acting as an anchor for an artificial tooth, dental implants consist of only a small titanium post that is placed in just one or two visits. These materials are used as they are compatible and can bond strongly to the living bone tissue. The techniques may range from replacing one missing tooth to replacing every tooth in the upper and/or lower jaw.

When natural teeth are extracted, the bone that held them in place begins to shrink. This can cause dentures and bridges to become uncomfortable. As implants provide points of firm attachment, they can help solve problems posed by traditional dentures and bridges. When fixed firmly in place, the implant will be strong enough to bear the daily forces of chewing and normal function. Clearly, they are ideal for patients who are either unwilling to wear dentures or are not good candidates for complete or partial dentures.

Are Dental Implants for me?

Implants have become an important part of modern dentistry with millions of people around the world enjoying the freedom and confidence of a full smile. Without interfering with your speech ability, eating and general comfort, dental implants will offer you the security to achieve that perfect smile!

Forum Dentistry employs specialists in restorative dentistry and works with the best dental laboratory in the area. This means that you can count on us to build the best teeth implants in Sydney that will be carefully moulded for your mouth. We understand that it is our job to deliver a three-fold benefit - functionality, aesthetics, and confidence.

However, not all patients are good candidates for dental implants. Most broadly speaking, teeth implants can be built for a person whose jawbone has reached full growth and the bone is adequate to provide strong support for the implant. It is also important for the patient to have healthy oral tissue and not suffer from any underlying health conditions that might prevent their jawbone from healing properly after the procedure.

All-On-4 Dental Implants

All-on-4 dental implants are a full-arch tooth replacement treatment designed for people who have lost most or all of their teeth, or whose remaining teeth require removal. The treatment uses four strategically positioned dental implants within the jaw to support a fixed bridge of replacement teeth. Rather than placing an implant for every individual tooth, the implants work together to support a complete upper or lower arch.

Treatment starts with a detailed consultation and assessment. Your dentist reviews your oral health, medical history and jaw structure, often using 3D imaging to plan the position of each implant. Implant placement then takes place as a surgical procedure.

A temporary fixed bridge is often fitted during the initial treatment period, depending on your individual circumstances. Once the implants have integrated with the jaw and healing has progressed, your dentist replaces the temporary restoration with the final bridge designed for long-term function and appearance.

All-on-4 treatment requires individual planning. Your dentist will assess your oral health, bone structure and treatment goals before discussing whether this approach is suitable for you.

Frequently asked questions

Dental implants are made to last. Regular check ups and proper care will ensure their longevity. If anything, you may need a new crown after 10-15 years if your existing one begins to wear down or crack.

During the procedure, you shouldn’t feel any pain as your dentist or oral surgeon will apply anaesthetic. In the days following each procedure, you may feel some tenderness or pain, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

The cost of a dental implant can vary quite dramatically depending on a number of factors, such as if you require more than one implant, the type of dental implant required (for example, All-on-4 dental implants) or even the type of materials used. At Forum Dentistry, St Leonards, your dentist will guide you through the options and create a treatment plan that works for you.

Traditional implant treatment often uses individual implants to replace single missing teeth or a larger number of implants to support a full arch. All-on-4 uses four strategically positioned implants to support a fixed full-arch bridge. Your dentist will recommend an approach based on your oral health, bone structure and treatment requirements.

All-on-4 treatment is generally considered for people who have lost most or all of their teeth, have several failing teeth, or currently wear removable dentures and are exploring a fixed alternative. Suitability depends on factors including your general health, oral health and available jawbone. A clinical assessment and 3D imaging help determine the appropriate treatment approach.

The implant placement procedure usually takes place during a planned surgical appointment. A temporary bridge is often fitted during the early healing period, subject to your clinical circumstances. Healing and implant integration generally take several months before your final bridge is fitted. Your dentist will provide a treatment timeline based on your individual treatment plan.
